Favorite Superhero + Why = Day 5

I am not a huge superhero fan. Sure, I have seen most of the movies. Well, thinking about it, I really think I have only seen Batman and Spiderman. If I had to choose between those two, I would definitely go with Batman. Why? Because I love his suit, his bat mobile, and the movies are pretty good too.

Right now, Ryleigh is loving her some Nick Jr, and they have this one show that I love watching with her. Maybe because it is catchy and cute, and because Ryleigh can sing along to every word. What is it you ask?

The Wonder Pets! And guess what else, they are Superheros!! We have Ming Ming the duck, Tuck the turtle, and Linny the Guinea pig.

"Linny, Tuck, and Ming Ming too, we are the Wonder Pets are so are you."
They are Superheros because they save all of their little animal friends in the forest, and the show is too cute. I love them because it is quirky, catchy, and so much fun!

It doesn't hit the hardest until hits right at home

Monday, a family member was admitted to the ICU for hyponatremia. In other words, their sodium was at 92. Our normals are supposed to be between 135 - 145. So the hypo, means low, while the natremia means sodium. So together you have a low sodium.  Levels shocking to all medical staff involved. Levels, who for anyone else, would have sent them straight into a coma, into a world of the unknown, and an outcome that only looked grim. Seizures, comas, death. The outcome, the prognosis was scary. But those are just the textbook definitions. Like mentioned earlier, although their levels were at alarming lows, the prognosis was fair, was positive, and the only way was up. Of course, it would just take time. I would give them all the time in the world if it made them better, made them healthy, and made them into who I remember.

We are taught at school to only get involved so much. While it is okay to share compassion, your heart only grows cold as the years go on. Sure, we feel for our patients, we want them better, but it is not our job to become attached, a lesson that was hard to cross. I have previously blogged about letting my guards down at work, and fighting back the tears. But to get where we are going, we must put on our fighter faces, and do our job. Because our job is their lives, so we must stand up tall, brush off the emotions, and step up to the plate with a huge shield over a heart. A task I have slowly learned to do.

I absolutely love what I do, and yes I am very compassionate towards my patients, but I do not show signs of weakness, and do my best to be a rock in their ever crumbling worlds.

This task isn't as easy when it hits right at home. You grow up your entire life seeing someone walk just fine, talk all time, feed themselves, and ultimately live their life just fine altogether. Then all of sudden it is taken away, and all the easy tasks are hard, complicated, and tiresome. But you encourage, you nag, and you don't stop because you know they can do it, and everything you have wants them to be able to be who they were. That funny person with too many jokes that I just started to understand a few years ago.

Over the past few days, I have sat in the hospital room, secretly fighting for someone to get stronger, do their best, and most importantly they hope that they make it home sometime before the next Alabama game. I really didn't think I would become as emotional as I did, but when the hard times happen to those close to you, its the only option that seems right at the time. And I guess you don't really know how much you love someone until you see them in a different light. A light that isn't shining quite as bright, and a light that was almost taken away in a flash. The darkness was a heartbeat away, and the scary truth is still ahead in the future that has yet to take place.

I pray everyday for their strength, their courage, and their ability to fight through this journey.  I know they can do it.

A picture from my childhood + 7 fun facts from that childhood = Day Four

yes, I sported this. thank you, Mom.
And here are the 7 fun facts from many years ago!

1. I loved Minnie mouse. I loved her so much that I had my very own Minnie dress that I wore on a regular basis, especially to Disney on Ice.
2. I ordered cheese sticks or chicken fingers EVERYWHERE I went, no seriously, I did.
3. In 3rd grade, I was a member of the girl scouts.
4. I had a hole in my ear drum when I was 5 or 6. It required same day surgery where they patched it up. For the rest of that summer, I had to wear a swimmer's cap every time I went near a pool.
5. I was obsessed with playing house, teacher, or banker, I spent everyday doing one of the 3.
6. I learned to french braid by braiding my doll's hair. Also, lesson learned as child... the dolls hair will not grow back if cut.
7. I got my ears pierced at least 4 times. It hurt so bad each time, and each time I took the earrings out. I didn't get them pierced until I was freshman in high school, when I re-pierced them myself. The holes were pretty much still there.
8. I know it said 7 but I had to add another one for my daddy. I only brushed the front of my hair. Why? Because I COULDN'T SEE THE BACK, DUH!!!!!! Therefore, it didn't need to be brushed. It hurt too darn bad, and my daddy always told me he was going to shave the nest! Luckily, he didn't! Then again, it probably would have looked better than the knotted up raggedy mop I sported my entire childhood.

Funnin' on a Friday.

A Bad Habit = Day Three

I probably have a few bad habits, but number one is definitely biting my nails. I try to keep them painted as often as I can, but we can't have any color on them come clinical time. That is when it gets ugly. However, I do like to keep them short. I have tried the whole, let them grow out thing, but they just feel so darn heavy, so off they go. So I keep them short and painted, or else they get chomped off. I know, I know, you would think after all of the infection control classes I have sat through, I could have possibly learned better. But a habit is hard to break my friend.

Number two, I twist my hair. This might actually could go as number one, so maybe they are tied for first. I have been twisting my hair since I was little. Actually, I twisted 2 bald spots in my hair when I was younger. Crazy. I don't know why I twist my hair. Habit, Anxiety, Boredom, and sometimes I just like the feeling of it between my fingers. Yeah, I will add another crazy to that list. I even got my sweet little niece started on the bad habit. oopsie. Sorry sister.

The bad habit list could go on and on, well for a little while at least. I scratch my throat which drives most people mad, and grind my teeth, which is uncontrollable by me.

So there you have it. Bad habit city.
